"He is a conundrum" - Pundit on Trent Alexander-Arnold

Pundit Matthew Upson has recently been talking about Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It is well known that the Scouser is a very good attacking player. However, Alexander-Arnold lets himself down defensively.

Upson has given his opinion on the aforementioned topic.

"With the ball, he's on a different planet for me. He sees things and plays one touch and sees passes that are just phenomenal. But in terms of the defensive unit, he isn't quite at the races," he told Sky Sports, as quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter.

"He is a conundrum in that sense because what he brings in terms of attacking play and passing and distribution and confidence and set pieces with the ball, it's another level. It really is, it's that good.

"But you break down the core of what a right-back role is, he doesn't offer it that well. He get's drawn out of position, his recovery isn't that great and his intensity in terms of the defensive side of the game is lacking and I think that gets exposed from time to time."

Anfield Watch Verdict

There is no denying that Alexander-Arnold needs to sharpen up defensively. If the Scouser doesn't, it might get to a point where Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is forced into changing his position.

Alexander-Arnold gets exposed far too easily. But, hopefully the coaching staff are working closely with the 23-year-old and looking to improve that particular aspect of his game. That is their job at the end of the day.

We wish Alexander-Arnold all the best for the remainder of the season. Hopefully he can take his game to another level in the coming months.

Only time will tell if that is to be the case. On another note, Liverpool's next Premier League fixture is against Bournemouth at Anfield on Saturday.
