"He has to leave" - Pundit urges Liverpool defender to depart Anfield this summer

Former Tottenham player Alan Hutton believes that Joe Gomez has to leave Liverpool to get more game time this summer.

With Gomez being our fourth-choice centre-back currently, there has been plenty of talk regarding his future.

Now, Hutton has urged the England international to leave Jurgen Klopp's side this summer.

“For him now at the age he’s at, I think he has to leave," he told Football Insider.

“I think Liverpool as a club will know what he’s capable of. That’s probably the main thing about it. He did come in and play alongside (Virgil) van Dijk and he flourished up until the injury which was a shame.

“I think he has to go and try and get football. Liverpool have brought in players and that’s knocked him down the pecking order.

“So it doesn’t look like he’s in a position to command a start within the team.

“For me personally I think he has to leave, he needs a new challenge. He has to go somewhere where he’s going to play week in, week out and get back to that level from before the injury."

Anfield Watch Verdict

There is no chance Gomez leaves this summer. In fact, it has been reported that the Reds are trying to tie him down to a new deal.

It has just been an unlucky 12 months for the 25-year-old (in regards to game time). Joel Matip has managed to stay fit, something he hasn't done since joining Liverpool back in 2016.

Heading into the future, Gomez will definitely have a more prominent role at Anfield, otherwise the club wouldn't be offering him a new deal.

With the signing of Calvin Ramsay too, it means that Klopp doesn't want him playing right-back (which he has at certain times) and he thinks of Gomez as a centre-back option.
