"He has struggled" - Luis Garcia on Darwin Nunez's pre-season
Former Liverpool forward Luis Garcia has given his verdict on Reds striker Darwin Nunez.
The club signed the Uruguay international from Benfica for a transfer fee of £67.50 million.
Nunez has played in two pre-season friendlies for Liverpool thus far, but he is yet to find the back of the net.
With that being the case, Garcia has touched on the 23-year-old's recent form.
“In the two games against Manchester United and Crystal Palace he has struggled,” he told ESPN, as quoted by Football365.
“He wants to show that he is going to be ready to play, with the press, with that high pressure that (Jurgen) Klopp does with Liverpool.
“But after three or four runs he was tired. He had a few chances, but I think it was because he was tired.
“He only had three (training) sessions, then into the game with Manchester United. He had ten sessions then faced Crystal Palace, but only played 30 minutes.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
We feel a bit sorry for Nunez. Because of the price tag, there is a bit of pressure on him.
We strongly believe that you can't judge a player off pre-season. The fixtures are designed for the players to get up to speed.
Nunez found the back of the net 47 times in 84 appearances for Benfica's first-team. So, the striker is certainly capable of scoring goals.
We are prepared to give Nunez a bit of time to adjust to a new environment and league. He is only young after all.
It must be intimidating walking into a huge football club for the first time. All eyes are on him.
Hopefully Nunez can relax and become Liverpool's No.1 forward in the years to come.
