"He doesn’t show the same desire" - Robbie Fowler on Alexander-Arnold
Pundit Robbie Fowler has criticised Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold for his performance against Napoli at the San Paolo Stadium last night.
It is well known by those who follow football that the Scouser is a terrific player going forward.
Alexander-Arnold has scored 14 goals and registered 62 assists in 234 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.
But, it is also well known that he is not the best player defensively.
After Liverpool's Champions League group stage clash against Napoli, Alexander-Arnold was called out by Fowler for his defensive display.
“You can’t call out him going forward but defensively we can pick him apart because he doesn’t show the same desire to get back than he does to get forward and that’s wrong. Liverpool were shocking defensively," he told The Daily Mail, as quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter.
Anfield Watch Verdict
As Fowler pointed out, Alexander-Arnold was defensively poor against Napoli. The right-back registered a WhoScored player rating of 6.59 for his 90-minute performance against the Serie A side.
To be fair, the entire Liverpool team defended poorly against Napoli. The Reds lost the match 4-1, which backs up the aforementioned argument.
Liverpool were superb defensively last season. The Reds only conceded 26 goals in 38 Premier League matches.
So, it was alarming to see Jurgen Klopp's team ship four goals to Napoli. Something is very wrong with the German's team at the moment.
Only time will tell if Liverpool are to get back to their best.
