Former Red believes Neco Williams did the right thing leaving Liverpool for Fulham

Neco Williams signed for Championship side Fulham in January and former Liverpool player Harry Wilson believes it was the correct decision.

Liverpool have a surplus of right-backs at the club currently. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the best full-back in the world and dethroning him is near impossible.

Neco Williams had the unfortunate task of trying to challenge the Scouser. The 20-year-old did manage to play 33 games for Liverpool, grabbing five assists in the process but he failed to put pressure on Trent.

However, even though he had limited game time with the Reds, his performances still got him a call-up to the Welsh national team, earning himself 17 caps already.

His lack of game time at Liverpool meant that he was looking for other opportunities elsewhere in the football league.

That was when, on the final day of the January transfer window, when Liverpool were negotiating a deal for Fulham's Fabio Carvalho, the Lilywhites enquired about bringing the Welsh international in on a six-month loan.

We now know that Liverpool failed to complete the deal for Carvalho but Fulham did manage to sign the paperwork for Williams in time.

The 20-year-old joined his former Liverpool academy player and Welsh teammate Harry Wilson in south London and he's already hit the ground running.

Speaking about Williams, Wilson said that it was the right time for Neco to leave Liverpool in search of regular game time.

“I think he’s getting the games I think he needs,” Wilson told The Athletic. “Obviously, he was at Liverpool learning from the best in Trent, but I think at his age and where he is in his career, coming out and playing games on loan was what he needed.

“He has settled in well, he’s got himself a couple of assists already and I know when I’ve got the ball, he’s always around me or he is inside me, and I thought we linked up well [vs Cardiff, where Fulham ran out 1-0 winners].”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Williams has already impressed at Fulham, getting two assists in his first six appearances for the Lilywhites.

Ever since leaving Anfield in 2021 for a fee of £12m, Wilson has become one of Fulham's best players, scoring nine goals and getting 13 assists in 31 games for his new club.

If Neco continues this great form and if Fulham get promoted to the Premier League then Liverpool could get a pretty penny for the 20-year-old if they decide to sell him in the summer transfer window.
