"Good thing" - Ilkay Gundogan makes title race claim after Spurs defeat

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has made a prediction regarding the 2021-22 Premier League title race.

The Citizens lost 3-2 to Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium last Saturday. Liverpool on the other hand defeated Norwich City 3-1 at Anfield on the same day.

With that being the case, Jurgen Klopp's side are only six points behind Pep Guardiola's team on the Premier League table.

Liverpool do have a game in hand and have to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on the 9th of April.

However, Gundogan is not too concerned about the Reds.

As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the 31-year-old told the BBC the following after Manchester City's clash against Tottenham: “We know from recent years that Liverpool are always contenders. They’re always there. We know they’ll try everything to make our lives as difficult as possible. "The good thing is they still need to come here, but there are still many games to go.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

To be fair, we can see where Gundogan is coming from. There is a still a lot of Premier League football to be played before April.

But, our biggest concern is that Liverpool have not defeated Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in four years. The Reds secured a 2-1 victory over the Citizens in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie back in 2018.

Therefore, Klopp's side will have to be at their best if they are to secure a result of Guardiola's team come April.

In saying that, Liverpool have won at the Etihad in the past. With that being the case, there is no reason why they can't do it again and mount a serious title challenge.

Leeds United are the club's next assignment in the Premier League. The clash will take place at Anfield on Wednesday night.
