Gary Neville slams Anfield atmosphere against Manchester United

Gary Neville has slammed Anfield's atmosphere as the worst he's ever experienced after Liverpool fell flat in Sunday afternoon's clash with Manchester United.

It was a landmark occasion for Anfield, with today's contest seeing fans finally welcomed into the extended Anfield Road end - bringing the stadium's attendance up to 57,158.

The largest Anfield turnout in 60 years, many were hoping the extra numbers would push Liverpool onto another emphatic victory over their North West rivals.

However, the crowd were left frustrated for much of the 90 minutes, having little to cheer about as the Reds slumped to a lacklustre goalless draw against Erik ten Hag's side.

On commentary for Sky Sports, former United defender Neville was particularly unimpressed with the lack of noise coming out of Anfield's stands.

Speaking in the first half, he said: “I have to say, this is by far the worst atmosphere I’ve ever seen at Anfield for a Manchester United game.

"It’s really, really quiet so far, other than the first five minutes where they were up for it."

Despite an underwhelming performance from both sides, Neville was pleased with the end result for United, having feared the worst for his former side going into the match.

"It'll be a huge relief to Erik Ten Hag because it's been a horrible week, with what happened against Bournemouth, going out of the Champions League with an inept performance against Bayern Munich," Neville added.

"Today, there was no doubt the clouds were circling and there was no Manchester United fan, including myself, that thought United would come out of here alive. Liverpool have been poor, well below par in this game. Their final third play was awful.

"Well done to them for showing a little bit of fight. To get a point here and a clean sheet is an unexpected result."
