Gareth Southgate selects two Liverpool players for the Qatar World Cup

With the World Cup around the corner, Gareth Southgate has named his squad and there are two Liverpool players travelling to Qatar.

It is the time of the month when every national team is starting to announce the 25-man squads for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Yesterday, Ibrahima Konate received a surprise call-up for the French side and earlier this week Brazilian duo Fabinho and Alisson were selected for Tite's World Cup squad.

The announcement that everyone was waiting for though was Gareth Southgate's England selection, with rumours starting months ago that Trent Alexander-Arnold would not be selected.

However, Trent and Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson have both been called up by the England manager and they will be on a plane to Qatar after the Southampton game this weekend.

The full England team is as followed:

Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale;

Trent Alexander Arnold, Connor Coady, Eric Dier, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Keiran Trippier, Ben White, Kyle Walker;

Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips, Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice;

Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, James Maddison, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling, Harry Wilson.

Anfield Watch Verdict

Whatever team Southgate selected was not going to be popular. There is already uproar that he didn't select former Chelsea and AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori. When you consider he is taking Maguire, who hasn't been starting for Manchester United all season, it makes sense why people are upset.

Personally, I couldn't really care less. Southgate has his favourites and even if he won't admit it he has stopped choosing players on form. If he went off form then the likes of  Maguire, Grealish, Phillips, Rashford, Gallagher, Coady and Walker would not be travelling to Qatar.

Hopefully Trent and Henderson can stay fit during the World Cup and not pick up any injuries as we have a stupid amount of games after this very unnecessary and controversial winter competition.
