FSG's Arne Slot appointment VINDICATED after meltdown
The appointment of Arne Slot at Liverpool now looks like a masterstroke, but he wasn’t the only candidate that the Reds’ hierarchy had in mind.
When Jurgen Klopp announced he would be leaving Anfield a number of potential replacements were assessed by the club, including Ruben Amorim who is now struggling at Manchester United.

In the end it was Slot who was chosen to lead the Reds this season, and he is doing a phenomenal job with Liverpool top of the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
As well as Slot and Amorim, Paulo Fonseca was also considered for the role, but it now looks like Liverpool may have dodged a bullet by skipping on the Portuguese head coach.
Fonseca’s time at AC Milan
After failing to land the seat in Anfield’s dugout, Fonseca was picked up by AC Milan, who are owned by RedBird Capital.
RedBird is an investor in Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, and believed that Fonseca was the man to lead the Rossoneri back to glory.
It was a short-lived journey with Fonseca however, and the 51-year-old has already been sacked and replaced by Sergio Conceicao.
Fonseca only won seven of his 17 Serie A matches in charge of AC Milan, and had the side sitting in eight place, 14 points off top with a game in hand.
Fonseca’s farcical sacking
The dismissal of the Portuguese boss was surrounded by confusion, with Fonseca coming out and denying rumours he had been sacked immediately after a 1-1 draw with AS Roma on Sunday.
Just hours later he then essentially confirmed to journalists outside the San Siro that he had indeed taken charge of his last game for the Rosseneri.
The nature of Fonseca’s dismissal sums up his time in Milan, who’s hierarchy have been slammed both for the appointment of the 51-year-old, and the manor in which he was sacked.
The Curva along with the AIMC (the Association for Milan Clubs) have released a joint statement hammering the decision makers at AC Milan.
“A management that has spent an entire summer boasting of being firmly convinced of the Fonseca project (making most of the signings available to the coach only at the end of the market) can no longer be credible” the statement reads.
“We only discover in these hours the inclusion of a clause linked to a possible dismissal within the first 6 months, which automatically makes the remaining years of the contract lapse, a clear symptom that Fonseca's was a fallback choice.”
Fonseca may have been a fallback choice for AC Milan and Liverpool supporters will be grateful that he didn’t end up taking charge at Anfield.
FSG’s decision to appoint Slot has once again been vindicated, and the decision to pass on Fonseca was definitely the right one.
