Former Liverpool 'keeper talks about the Alisson vs Ederson debate
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Friedel has weighed in on the Alisson vs Ederson debate.
Speaking to 888Sport, as quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, Friedel said that he rates Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson ahead of Manchester City shot-stopper Ederson.
“They’re different 'keepers and I would put Alisson ahead slightly, but someone could sit next to me and argue the other way," he said.
“Ederson is better with his feet. He’s special with his feet, superb. Alisson is probably a touch better with shot-stopping overall. They’re the same on crosses and one-on-ones. Maybe Alisson is a larger figure and has a bigger presence.
“But with Ederson I turn on the TV to be entertained by a goalkeeper and it’s not often you can say that. I like watching goalkeepers, don’t get me wrong, but I turn on the TV wanting the ball to go to his feet.
“I want to see how composed he is. I want to see him hit a seventy-yard pass on a dime. He’s fun to watch.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
Brazil are blessed with two unbelievable goalkeepers, but as a Liverpool fan, I'm obviously going to favour Alisson. In fact, if you were on social media during the end of the season, then you would've seen Ederson get a lot of stick from Manchester City fans.
Even though Ederson is thought to have better footwork/passing than Alisson, there's not that big of a difference when you take a closer look at the statistics.
Firstly, Alisson got one assist last season which is crazy considering he's a 'keeper. He also completed more passes and more forward passes than his Brazilian counterpart during the 2021-22 campaign.
When we look at actual goalkeeping figures, Alisson eclipses Manchester City's No.1 in nearly every department.
Alisson has conceded fewer goals, made more saves, completed more punches, high claims and sweeper clearances.
To put the cherry on top of the cake and end this debate, Alisson's save rate is 76%, which was the highest in the Premier League last season.
