Amidst a phenomenally busy schedule, this week's midweek fixtures saw the return of the Carabao Cup.

And in a tense and nervy contest between Leicester and Walsall, one of Liverpool's ex-players found his groove to send the Foxes through to the 4th round.

While on the surface a 0-0 draw on a cold night in Walsall may seem innocuous, the fact that the tie had to be decided through a penalty shootout ensure the game would deliver a grandstand finish.

At 31-years-old, Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward is no longer a regular in the team, but as with Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher who faces a similar situation as a No2 - although for different reasons - he is more than capable of turning up when called upon.

Despite a feisty contest, where Leicester dominated the possession stats, Ward had little to do throughout the 90 minutes, but when it came to penalties, he showed he still has exactly what it takes to win matches for his team.

While Leicester scored all three of their penalties, Ward ensured Walsall weren't given a sniff, keeping all the Saddlers' efforts out in a remarkable display.

Danny Ward still delivering when given the opportunity

Joining Liverpool in 2012 as a member of the U21s team, the goalkeeper failed to breakthrough into the first team, only making three appearances for the club - two in the Premier League and one in the Carabao Cup.

In three different loan moves to Morecambe, Aberdeen and Huddersfield Town, the Reds still didn't feel convinced and subsequently moved the Welshman on to Leicester City in 2018.

Remarkably, the club received £12.3million for the goalkeeper, an enormous profit on his initial £100k transfer fee from Wrexham back in 2012.

Ward was given the No2 role while Kasper Schmeichel was the preferred option long-term, but across 49 Leicester appearances, he has certainly made his mark.

As a result of Ward's astonishing efforts in Leicester's penalty shootout win, they will progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup and with Liverpool in action against West Ham tonight, we could see the Welshman come up against his former club should the Reds win.
