Forget contracts: FSG have a BIGGER Liverpool concern

It's crazy to suggest Liverpool have a bigger issue than contracts at the moment, but that is the argument we are going to make here.

There is no denying Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold have to be tied down to new deals. Liverpool cannot lose them on free transfers.

No one is going to argue otherwise here. FSG simply have to get that done. No questions asked. All three should be wearing Liverpool's nice new Adidas shirts come next season.

However, the argument here is that for Liverpool's future there's something even more important FSG have to solve. Something that will determine the success of this new era in the boardroom with Michael Edwards returning and Richard Hughes as sporting director.

What's more important than contracts you say?

Well, we are glad you asked. Contracts are a priority but Edwards and his team have a long-term vision. When Edwards came back to Liverpool, he arrived as the chief executive of football for FSG.

At the time it was thought that Edwards would be returning to aid in FSG's ambitions to expand their portfolio in football.

This was a key decision behind Edwards' return. He explained as such in FSG's statement announcing his appointment.

"One of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organisation," said Edwards.

"I believe that to remain competitive, investment and expansion of the current football portfolio is necessary."

Subsequently, Julian Ward came in as FSG's technical director and Pedro Marques was brought in from Benfica as FSG's director of football development.

Since then, the ambition has been for Edwards and his team to recruit some of the best young players all around the world. That is why Anfield Watch understands the likes of Stefanos Tzimas was pursued as we exclusively revealed.

Momodou Sonko was another Liverpool targeted and El Hadji Malick Diouf is also a target.

And this is not a unique situation to the Edwards era. Anfield Watch understands Milos Kerkez was approached by the club back in 2023 with a proposal for a transfer while he was at AZ Alkmaar. But Kerkez refused because he wanted to join a side where he would be playing regular football.

But there is a reticence for these young players to come to Anfield because their minutes will not be guaranteed. They're already playing regular football and they know minutes will be the only way they can develop.

That's why Brighton have moved ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Tzimas. That's why Sonko decided to move to Gent first despite Liverpool's interest and that's why Diouf will likely not end up at Anfield either.

FSG need to deliver on their promise to Edwards. The multi-club needs to be in place so Liverpool's recruitment team can bring these payers into a wider umbrella and provide them a pathway to Anfield.

If that is not resolved, Edwards and his team's effort will be in vain. Wonderkids will continue to reject Liverpool and the Reds will never be able to future proof as effectively as the likes of Brighton can, who have a massive advantage in being closely affiliated with Union SG in Belgium.

This is why FSG have to act as soon as possible. Sooner than even the contract situation unfolding at the moment.
