5 talking points from Liverpool's 2-1 win over Brighton

Liverpool propelled themselves back to the top of the table after coming from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 in the Premier League.

It was a nightmare start for the Reds, who went behind inside two minutes thanks to a venomous strike from former Manchester United and Arsenal man Danny Welbeck.

Liverpool were able to regroup and started to pile on the pressure down the other end - finally finding a reprieve in the 27th minute as Luis Diaz volleyed home to level the score.

After going into the break on terms, Liverpool pressed for a second and found luck through a fantastic fast-paced move - Dominik Szoboszlai drilling one into the feet of Mac Allister, who slipped through Mohamed Salah to finish.

The Reds appeared to have got their third after Diaz forced home - only for the Colombian to be deemed a millimetre offside by VAR.

It meant they had to endure a nervy final period, with former Reds star Adam Lallana seeing his late effort flash just past the far post.

However, Jurgen Klopp's side were able to see out the result, sending them to the top of the league ahead of this afternoon's mammoth clash between title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal.

Alexis Mac Allister far from a £35m player

Brighton’s board must have been watching today’s game wondering how they could ever allow themselves to sell Alexis Mac Allister for £35m.

The Argentinian put on a flawless display against his former employers – winning the ball well and distributing it with ease as he dictated play in the middle.

One of, if not the best performance in a Reds shirt since his arrival last summer, Mac Allister stole the show at Anfield – notching an assist for Liverpool’s winner.

He’s the first name on the team sheet at the moment. Indispensable.

A very sloppy start

Liverpool immediately made the afternoon harder for themselves, conceding within the space of two minutes.

Take nothing away from the finish – it was an absolute belter from Welbeck who lashed past a helpless Kelleher in net.

But in the build-up to the goal, there were a handful of defensive errors as the likes of Conor Bradley and Virgil van Dijk were caught napping.

Far from the start Liverpool would have dreamt for, and something that needs sorting going into the Premier League season run-in.

Conor Bradley struggles at the back

The rise to prominence of Conor Bradley has been one of the big long-term positives to emerge since the turn of the year for Liverpool.

That said, today was probably the most exposed he’s looked since breaking into the first team.

Up against electrifying winger Simon Adingra, he was first caught out of position for the opener, giving the Ivorian all the space in the world to break into.

And for the rest of the game, he found serious trouble against the 22-year-old, who throughout the contest proved why he’s been so highly rated in recent months.

Credit where credit’s due, Bradley was still very strong going forward today. But his defensive showing gave something to be concerned about.

Mo Salah takes an hour to find his shooting boots

A man who in his last outing became Liverpool’s first ever player to score 20 goals in seven consecutive season, Salah did not look like the talismanic figure we’ve become so used to seeing for the first hour of today’s contestgrf4vt.

Fluffing a shower of opportunities, his shooting boots were clearly missing throughout the first half.

A notable blunder came as he went one-on-one with Verbruggen, only to release a pathetic pea-roller of an effort into the arms of the young Dutchman.

To the credit of the Egyptian, he looked as sharp as ever off the ball – and he did finally get his goal in 65^th minute as he tucked past Verbruggen.

But for a lot of today, the ball just wasn’t going in for him.

Joe Gomez comes up with the goods once again

Joe Gomez was last term considered by many as an injury-prone liability, perennially linked with a transfer away. Who knows where we’d be without him this season.

As he’s done so much this campaign, Gomez once again filled in at the back where he was needed, doing a job at left-back in place of the injured Andy Robertson.

He bossed it down the left, coming up with the goods defensively while also contributing going forward.

His sheer versatility and newfound reputation as Liverpool’s ‘Mr Dependable’ has been invaluable this season. No doubt he deserves to be going to the Euros, probably as a starter.
