All directions now point towards that decision being Real Madrid. Alexander-Arnold is almost destined to be at the Bernabeu next season.

There is no way to sugarcoat this. It's a devastating blow for Liverpool. He's a generational player who will be difficult to replace on the pitch.

What will be even more difficult to replace is the face he gave this Liverpool team. He represented the city - the boyhood scouser who made his dreams come true.

This kind of player does not come around often.

Stop EVERYTHING: Harry Kane wants to join Liverpool

Somehow and in some way, Liverpool will need to replace Alexander-Arnold, here are five players that the Reds will undoubtedly consider.

Jeremie Frimpong

He's the high profile candidate and the name Liverpool fans will have heard of the most. Frimpong is a brilliant player and comes with a high pedigree.

But there are question marks. First of all, he plays in a wing-back role for Bayer Leverkusen. In fact calling it a wing-back role is generous.

The positions he takes up are more in line with the positions Mo Salah takes up in this Liverpool team. That will leave question marks over just how effective of a replacement Frimpong could be for Alexander-Arnold.

Of course, it's not to say that he can't do the job. Merely, that there is no evidence of him being able to do it - Liverpool would be betting on that blindly.

Even if they would undoubtedly getting a very good offensive player, that's a risk.

Givairo Read

He's recently locked up Rafael Leao in the Champions League and registered a hat-trick of assists against FC Twente for Feyenoord in his last Eredivisie match.

Only 18 years old, Read has emerged as one of the most exciting young right-backs in European football. He's a Liverpool fan and Arne Slot will know him well - he was the one to give Read his professional debut last season.

There are similarities in his playing style to Alexander-Arnold. He's a dynamic player who can distribute the ball really well and he has a lot of potential to become a superstar in the position.

But the step-up from the Eredivisie to the Premier League is a steep one. He's a very raw player, with little experience coming up against world-class opposition.

Liverpool would be betting on potential with Read rather than proven quality now.

Hector Fort

According to SciSports, Fort has a 99% similarity to Alexander-Arnold in his style of play. The Barcelona defender is already a regular first team player for the Catalans at just 18 years old.

But his future is up in the air at the moment. His current contract at Barcelona lasts until the summer of 2026 and he's yet to extend his deal.

His situation won't be helped by the fact that Barcelona are close to signing AS Monaco right-back Vanderson as a back-up option behind Jules Kounde.

That will leave Fort on the periphery of the team and it would give Richard Hughes an opportunity to bring in an exciting talent.

Fort would be well-suited to Slot's style of play and while he isn't ready to be a starter, he could be an astute understudy to Conor Bradley.

Martim Fernandes

He's a player who has been linked with a move very recently and who might just be the ideal solution.

At just 19 years old, he has emerged as one of the most exciting young full-backs in the game and has established himself as a regular for Porto's senior team.

One of the main factors why Liverpool like Fernandes is because of his distribution. Among U21 players he ranks highest in Europe for expected assists (0.36 per 90) and he also averages the third most key passes (1.38 per 90).

Add to that his six completed through balls which ranks him third in Europe's top 7 leagues among U23 full-backs. Meanwhile, CIES Football Observatory's Index has him performing as the 7th best U20 player in the world this year.

With such impressive data, it's probably no surprise to see Fernandes on the club's radar. He seems like exactly the type of player who would be flagged up by Liverpool's recruitment team.

Amar Dedic

Another player who has a 99% similarity to Alexander-Arnold in his playing style according to SciSports.

Dedic was the captain of Red Bull Salzburg's team, earning that recognition as a teenager. He is now the star of Bosnia's senior national team and Marseille.

Only 22-years-old, Dedic moved to Marseille in the January transfer window so it's going to be difficult to get him to come to Anfield this summer.

However, on paper, he ticks a lot of boxes for the Reds. He's a dynamic player who is competent going forward and defensively as well.

Having received that Red Bull education in his formative years, he shares similarities with some of the lynchpins in this Liverpool side in Dominik Szoboszlai and Ibrahima Konate.
