Fans make decision on Darwin Nunez or Cody Gakpo against Arsenal - poll results

Liverpool's forwards have been in disappointing form in recent weeks.

Since the beginning of December, the Reds have scored nine goals in five games. Of those, the Reds' four fit attackers - Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo - have scored just one.

They have been outscored by the club's defenders (3) and midfielders (4), while Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno has netted as many for Liverpool this month following his own goal at Anfield.

All of Jurgen Klopp's attackers have been below their best, but Nunez continues to be the striker who divides opinion most. While he made a quick start to the campaign, the erratic Uruguayan is without a goal since the 1 November, and is currently underperforming his Premier League expected goals by +5.10.

Liverpool's attacking woes have been exacerbated by an injury to Diogo Jota, with Gakpo the only real alternative to the misfiring Nunez. However, the Dutchman hasn't been pulling up trees in a red shirt either, netting one goal fewer than the former Benfica striker this term.

WHO SHOULD START AGAINST ARSENAL?

While Liverpool do face a tricky Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham United on Wednesday, the Reds return to Premier League action next weekend against table-topping Arsenal.

If Klopp's side play as poorly as they did during their goalless draw with Manchester United on Sunday, they will have their work cut out to avoid a battering at the hands of the Gunners.

Therefore, the Liverpool boss will need to pick the right team to face the north London club, especially given Arsenal will enjoy a rest midweek.

One key decision he will have to make is in the centre-forward position between Nunez and Gakpo, but luckily Anfield Watch's followers are here to help him out.

Posed the question on X, it was pretty clear that Gakpo was the favourite among fans for a starting berth against the Gunners, managing 71% of the vote. Meanwhile, the out-of-form Nunez accumulated just 29%.

Liverpool's Dutchman certainly could be due a run in the team, more regularly starting in the Carabao Cup and Europa League than the Premier League in recent weeks.

The former PSV attacker offers the Reds something unique, with the capacity to drop into deep positions and play a false nine role that somewhat resembles the job that Roberto Firmino used to do for Klopp.

Meanwhile, Nunez is probably a more useful asset off the bench at present, able to exploit tired and stretched defences with his pace and willingness to run in behind.

While both forwards have been underperforming, it's perhaps time to give Gakpo the chance to thrive on the big stage.
