Fabrizio Romano confirms that contract talks are ongoing for Liverpool midfielder

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed on Twitter that talks are ongoing in regards to James Milner's contract situation.

The Liverpool midfielder's current deal expires at the end of the season. As thing stand, Milner will be a free agent in less than five months.

But, Romano has hinted that there is a chance that Milner could remain at Liverpool next season. The journalist also stated that the 36-year-old has no plans to retire from professional football.

Romano tweeted the following: "There are talks - but like always, we usually don’t comment further on that.

“The club will be in talks with Milner, so we will see. There is no chance that Milly will retire."

Liverpool signed Milner from Manchester City on a free transfer back in the summer of 2015. Since then, the midfielder has gone on to make 274 appearances for the club's first-team.

Back in 2018, Gini Wijnaldum provided an insight into why Milner has been able to consistently represent Liverpool throughout the backend of his career.

“It is [incredible to reach 500 Premier League games], and also that he is still so fit. He’s a machine,” the former Red told LFC Later.

“We always see him in the gym and sometimes I’ll say: ‘James, you might take a little bit of rest!’

“But he is always busy to keep his body as fit as possible so for me it’s not a surprise that he’s made so many appearances."

Despite the fact that Milner is 36 years of age, we would not be against the club offering him a one-year deal.

The midfielder has been averaging a WhoScored player rating of 6.62 for the Reds this season, which highlights that he is still capable of playing at the highest level.

Also, as Wijnaldum has pointed out, Milner is a superb professional. Therefore, he always gives himself every chance to perform well.
