The Euro 2024 winner's decision not to join Liverpool cost Richard Hughes dearly with the Reds unable to find an alternative solution to fix Arne Slot's midfield hole.
However, Zubimendi's decision did not just derail Liverpool's incoming transfer plans. It also derailed a key departure, who has remained at Anfield rather than leaving for a major deal elsewhere.
How Martin Zubimendi prevent major Tyler Morton deal
Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool were unable to complete a major sale due to Zubimendi's snub in the summer window.
Arne Slot is believed to be an admirer of Tyler Morton for his ability to retain possession. However, the Dutchman has had question marks over Morton's well-roundedness.
It is understood Slot prefers his other midfield options over Morton.
That is why the club were willing to sanction an £18m transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, where Morton would have been able to link-up with Xabi Alonso.
However, Anfield Watch understands the move fell through because Liverpool did not get Zubimendi over the line.
Selling Morton would have kept Liverpool short in the midfield department which is why Hughes and his recruitment team opted to reject Leverkusen's advances.
Morton has struggled for minutes at Anfield since staying on Merseyside. However, he is viewed as a valuable member of the squad. Unless, Liverpool make further acquisitions at this stage it seems unlikely that he will leave.
However, that could change if the right proposal comes in.
