Nunez also has interest from several European clubs. Although it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will be forced to concede a loss on the €85m they brought him from Benfica for.

But what is clear is that Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards are already making steps to replace the Liverpool forward.

Why Liverpool have identified Victor Osimhen as Darwin Nunez's replacement

Anfield Watch can exclusively reveal that Liverpool really admire Victor Osimhen and Edwards and Hughes both view him as the ideal replacement for Nunez.

Liverpool's interest in Osimhen goes back many years, with Edwards a keen admirer of the Nigerian since his first foray in European football in Belgium and then Lille.

Osimhen is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli after being forced to move to the Turkish club following a falling out with the club's officials in Naples.

It is expected that he will depart the Italian side on a permanent deal this summer with plenty of clubs interested in his services.

If Nunez is sold as expected, Liverpool will be at the front of the queue to bring Osimhen to Anfield.

The club's recruitment team have been impressed by the 26-year-old's form this season in Turkey with Osimhen having netted 13 goals and registered five assists in just 16 matches for Galatasaray so far.

It means he is averaging a goal contribution every 65 minutes, which is a mouthwatering rate and explains why Liverpool would be so keen to sign the forward, who is also a former top-scorer in the Serie A.
