Exclusive: Fabrizio Romano reveals Liverpool summer transfer window plans
Liverpool could be looking to add both a midfield and centre-back in the summer transfer window later this year, Fabrizio Romano has exclusively told Anfield Watch.
The Reds' title defence has been hampered this season by injuries at centre-half - a position the club was already short in after Dejan Lovren's exit - whilst in midfield Gini Wijnaldum's future remains up in the air.
With that said, then, Romano is of the opinion that those two central areas could be where the Reds look to add in the summer, whilst a third area could be up top if Divock Origi leaves the club.
Speaking exclusively to Anfield Watch, Romano revealed the Reds' likely summer plans, which also include looking at contracts for current stars:
"For sure they'll need something in midfield if Gini Wijnaldum leaves the club so they'll be looking to be ready for that depending on what the situation is with him in the coming weeks and then a centre-back for sure and that's probably the main two positions.
"Then you have to understand the situations with contracts with the likes of Salah, Fabinho, Firmino and Van Dijk. With two years left you have to be ready to prevent any problems there in the future [from other clubs bidding] so Liverpool are planning for this side and new contracts in the summer as well as new signings.
"But for sure, a new midfielder and a centre-back are the two key positions for Liverpool at the moment, though they also have to decide if Origi leaves whether to sign a back-up option for Roberto Firmino.
"We don't know right now exactly about the names because in the market at the moment you can't plan too much as a club because we don't know next season if fans will be back or not and, therefore, if the merchandising of the clubs will be back.
"Clubs are losing a lot of money, big clubs in particular like Liverpool. They are paying salaries to their stars but not having any incoming money.
"It's a complicated situation but if we're in a normal situation next summer I expect some big names to be moving."
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
Romano is obviously right to stress that current financial issues around the globe could impact the market but we'll hopefully be nearer to normality by the summer and the Reds will be able to act.
It's obvious a new centre-half is needed after the way this season has gone and, of course, if Gini Wijnadm leaves the club a replacement for him will be needed to.
Certainly, with new contract offers potentially in the offing, it could be a busy time at Liverpool in the coming months.
