Every Liverpool player out of contract by summer 2025

We are nearing the end of the season and the end of an era at Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp will walk away from Anfield at the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign after more than eight-and-a-half glorious years in charge.

Meanwhile, the manager's impending exit has brought forward a backroom restructure, with Michael Edwards returning as FSG's CEO of football along with new sporting director Richard Hughes from Bournemouth.

The new team have a sizeable to-do list, starting with the unenviable task of appointing a successor worthy of following on from Klopp.

After that comes squad planning, with transfer targets to be identified and the existing players to be assessed.

There is also the not so small matter of contract renewals to deal with. Several key Liverpool stars are now just over a year from their terms expiring and this summer will represent a pivotal moment.

Who do the Reds offer fresh terms to? Who will be cashed in on? And who will be left to potentially walk away on a free next summer?

Here are the players whose contracts are closest to expiring at Anfield as things stand.

  • Joel Matip
  • Adrian San Miguel

Three Liverpool first-teamers are set to become out of contract this summer and, although nothing is certain yet, none look likely to be offered extensions before their expiry dates.

Thiago, now 32, has made just one sub appearance in all of 2023/24 amid a nightmare season in which he has struggled to recover from hip surgery. Widespread reports predict he will leave this summer after four years on Merseyside.

Adrian, too, is set to depart after his fifth season at Anfield. The 38-year-old has not made a first-team outing besides the Community Shield since the 2021/22 season.

Meanwhile, Joel Matip's ACL injury has seemingly ushered in a sad end to a much-loved figure's Liverpool tenure.

Klopp had previously hinted the centre-back could be offered an extension despite his long-term injury, but much of the recent talk suggests that is unlikely and that the former Schalke star will now depart.

Liverpool players with contracts expiring in 2025

  • Trent Alexander-Arnold
  • Mohamed Salah
  • Virgil van Dijk

While the trio of expiring contract this summer may not cause much second thought for Liverpool fans (save an emotional tear for Matip and dreams of what could've been for Thiago), next year will see three huge stars on the brink of exits unless they sign new terms.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was made vice-captain last summer and would typically be expected to continue on for many years at his boyhood club. However, there have been reports of interest from Real Madrid, a tempting proposition that the new Reds' hierarchy will have to work to ward off in negotiations.

Mo Salah has been linked with the Saudi Pro League for over a year and while big-money bids were easy to turn down last summer, it may be a different story this year.

The 31-year-old Egyptian continues to be Liverpool's most productive attacker, while his numbers and attention to fitness suggest he could continue at the very top well into his mid-30s.

However, what he wants to do at this point in his career and what the new Liverpool leaders are prepared to offer him to stay beyond 2025 (if anything) remains to be seen.

Club captain Virgil van Dijk, like Salah, is at an age where big-money long term extensions are not easily dished out, even for such an elite operator. As with the other two, he is unlikely to be prepared to make any decisions over his future until he sees the direction of the club post-Klopp.
