Every Hungarian footballer to play for Liverpool

Liverpool's new number eight Dominik Szoboszlai comes from a country with a great footballing heritage.

However, the nation that gave the world Ferenc Puskas, Laszlo Kubala and Sandor Kocsis has not produced many Premier League stars (jogging-bottom enthusiast Gabor Kiraly being one of the notable standouts) and even fewer Liverpool players.

To be precise, just three Hungarians prior to Szoboszlai have ever even featured in the matchday squad for the Reds first team.

Here are those men.

Istvan Kozma (1992-93)

Position: Midfielder

Appearances: 10

Goals: 0

A solid, if unspectacular, midfielder for Dunfermline in the late eighties and early nineties, Kozma's signing for Liverpool by then-manager Graeme Souness was one of a few transfers that raised eyebrows.

Kozma struggled to break into the first team and made just 10 appearances in all competitions before moving on to Budapest-based club Ujpest. He is notable for being the first Hungarian to play for Liverpool and for being a regular on every 'worst ever Liverpool signings' list

Peter Gulacsi (2007-2013)

Position: Goalkeeper

Appearances: 0

Goals: 0

Signed as one of a number of players from MTK Hungaria as part of a link-up with the club, Gulacsi was more successful than his fellow recruits Krisztian Nemeth and Andras Simon in that he did make it to the Reds' first-team squad — he just never actually played in a game. Across five years, Gulacsi made the Liverpool bench over 50 times in competitive fixtures but never once got on the field.

He has since gone on to become a star of the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig and has made over 50 appearances for the Hungary national team.

Adam Bodgan (2015-2019)

Position: Goalkeeper

Appearances: 6

Goals: 0

Signed on a free transfer from Bolton in 2015, Bogdan's role was only ever as a backup to first-choice Simon Mignolet. His two Premier League and four domestic cup outings are not particularly fondly remembered on Merseyside, with Bogdan dropping a corner at the feet of Nathan Ake in a 3-0 defeat to Watford on his debut and later allowing Exeter to score directly from a corner in the FA Cup. Yikes.

After the 2015/16 season, the Hungarian spent the rest of his Liverpool contract out on loan at Wigan and Hibs.
