Everton vs Liverpool postponement fears grow: UPDATE as joint statement released

Liverpool are scheduled to play their final league fixture at Goodison Park on Saturday - but will it go ahead? A weather warning has now been issued.

UPDATE: Liverpool and Everton joint statement

Liverpool and Everton have released a joint statement on the derby tomorrow. They’re warning fans to be very careful when travelling to Goodison Park, to allow extra time to do so, and to keep an eye on any further weather warnings.

With the storm starting on Merseyside tonight, this one could update quickly.

That time, it was Storm Bert doing the damage. The wind and rain led to a yellow warning by the Met Office. They were essentially saying that the chances of impact were low and the level of impact was middling.

But now fears of postponement are back. Liverpool are supposed to play Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday in what would be the final league Merseyside derby at the ground.

The Toffees, of course, will move into their new stadium at the start of next season. If it's not leaking.

There's a more severe weather warning this time around, however. And it's one that Goodison might struggle with.

Everton vs Liverpool weather warning

The Met Office currently has an Amber warning out for the Merseyside area on Saturday. That's a level above what we saw against Southampton.

The reason for this is that while it's currently 'unlikely' to make an impact, the potential damage is very high. And Everton have suffered this problem before.

They saw a fixture postponed back in 2014 against Crystal Palace because of high winds. The incoming storm is very similar, making the risk of a postponement very real.

Even if the major impacts are 'unlikely' there are two factors at play.

One is that there's a potential 'danger to life' here from trees and debris. The police are highly unlikely to take any risks there if they sense something could go wrong.

Then there's the fact that winds on Merseyside are expected to peak at around 70mph at 1 pm on Saturday. The match couldn't really be timed in a worse spot - kick-off is set for 12:30.

So there is a chance that this one goes ahead, and arguably a good one. But the fears over postponement are very, very real.
