The Merseyside derby won't go ahead on Saturday and that's a big win for Liverpool. The Reds can celebrate this one.

Everton were supposed to host Liverpool on Saturday in what would have been the final league Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. That won't be going ahead, however.

The fixture has been postponed, with the new date unknown as of yet. Storm Darragh has done the damage - winds of around 70mph are expected around kick-off time and it's been determined that the 'danger to life' is too high for a football match.

Which is fair enough.

This was always very possible given the forecast and there shouldn't be any great surprise that this has been called off. Now we simply wait for the new date - which will likely be in 2025.

While this is a blow to anyone hoping to watch the derby today, we don't believe it's a blow to Liverpool. In fact, the Reds should be celebrating this one.

Everton vs Liverpool postponed

Liverpool have been in magical form this season but they did drop points in midweek. Newcastle United grabbed a late equaliser - having already led twice - to finish the fixture 3-3.

And the Reds simply weren't themselves in that one. They looked leggy, which shouldn't be a surprise given they'd played both Real Madrid and Manchester City in the prior week.

On top of that, Liverpool's squad keeps shrinking. Alisson Becker, Conor Bradley, Ibrahima Konate, Kostas Tsimikas, Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota are all out injured. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harvey Elliott, who were on the bench, are barely back from their own absences.

So this postponement means Liverpool have a nice break between the Newcastle fixture at Girona away on Tuesday. And if we're being honest, that's a fixture in which Arne Slot may fancy rotating a bit.

Should Liverpool replace Darwin Nunez?

Liverpool are at the top of the UEFA Champions League and Girona are currently 8th in La Liga. They're not having the most consistent season. It's a good opportunity to rotate even a touch.

Now, this does mean that Liverpool will have a cramped fixture list down the line. The derby has to be played somewhere, so they'll lost out on a break where they did have one.

But the squad should be in much better shape by then. Several players should return from injuries and as long as there aren't any more, a run of games should be easier to handle down the line than it is right now.

So all things considered, we think this is a real win for Liverpool.
