Former Liverpool player El Hadji Diouf claims that Liverpool aren't offering Mohamed Salah a new contract because he's African.

Speaking to the Daily Star, as cited by LFC Transfer Room, the former Liverpool striker has made a ludicrous claim about why Mo Salah isn't getting the contract offer he wants.

"Salah has to realise that he is African, so they will not treat him like the Europeans, and they will not give him the best contract like the others," said Diouf. "The same thing happened to me when I was at Liverpool, they told me not to go to play with my national team."

Anfield Watch Verdict

You'll struggle to find an ex Liverpool player that fans hate more than El Hadji Diouf. Apart from having a horrible attitude, he was also a terrible footballer for the Reds.

The Senegalese international signed for Liverpool from Lens for a reported fee of £13m in 2002. Diouf played 80 games for Liverpool and only managed to score six goals.

Even if a player is bad whilst playing for the club, Liverpool fans are usually very respectable to former players after they depart the club.

However, this is not the case for Diouf as after he left Anfield, he slated one of Liverpool's biggest club legends, Steven Gerrard.

Speaking to SFR Sport, as cited by GiveMeSport, Diouf said that he didn't 'respect' Gerrard.

“People told me at Liverpool, there was some guys you could not touch, but I touched them. That is why it was complicated for me," said Diouf.

“When I arrived I showed [Gerrard] he was nothing at all. He was nothing at all.

“I asked him to tell me in which big competition, Euros or World Cup, people think about him.

“I repeat. I respect the player, very big player, but the man, I do not respect. And I told him, I let him know that.

“With all my respect I let him know. For me in Liverpool, he was not just a player like anyone else. He had to work and play his football as I had to work and play my football.

“Then as you know, there were some brown-nosers, who went to the manager to repeat what I said. That was the real problem. When Gerrard did that, we had an argument, like real men.

“That is why he does not like me. He knows I say what I think, that when it is not right, no problem, I am up for it.

“He could not, he was afraid of looking into my eyes. He was afraid of talking to me. Let’s not forget when I arrived I did not ask for his shirt. He asked for my Senegal shirt for one of his mates.”
