Ederson a doubt for Liverpool clash after withdrawing from Brazil squad
In what could be a major boost for Liverpool, Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has had to withdraw from the Brazil squad because of injury.
Ederson will miss out on his country's World Cup qualifiers against Luis Diaz's Colombia and Alexis Mac Allister's Argentina in the coming week after sustaining a foot injury during City's 4-4 draw against Chelsea on Sunday.
The 30-year-old played the full 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge, suffering the injury in the closing stages.
Brazil's national team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, explained: "He suffered trauma to his foot in the final minutes and was able to continue the match, but the pain became intense. The foot became swollen, making it difficult to walk."
Ederson's loss is Alisson's gain. After having to make do with a spot on the bench during the last round of internationals, the Liverpool keeper will now be expected to start these crucial fixtures for his country, who are currently five points adrift of the reigning World Champions in third place.
Growing injury list for Man City
The withdrawal of Ederson from the Brazil squad will come as a concern for Premier League leaders Manchester City, ahead of their upcoming fixture against Liverpool on 25 November.
The Reds are just one point behind the Citizens in second place and Pep Guardiola may now be forced to field backup keeper Stefan Ortega for this crucial game.
In another potential blow for the Spanish coach, defender Nathan Ake, who missed the game at Stamford Bridge, has also pulled out of the Netherlands squad. However, specific details regarding Ake's injury are yet to be disclosed.
Kevin de Bruyne and John Stones are both confirmed absentees for the crunch clash after the break, while Mateo Kovacic is another doubt, with the Croat also forgoing international duty this month.
Jurgen Klopp's side will be hoping to capitalise on these potential absences when they travel to the Etihad in 11 days' time, for a game that could have significant implications in the Premier League title race.
