Eddie Howe's huge claim about Alisson Becker wonder save

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe was left stunned by Alisson Becker's save from a Miguel Almiron volley in his club's dramatic 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at St. James' Park on Sunday.

Anthony Gordon gave the hosts a deserved lead as the ex-Everton man capitalised on Trent Alexander-Arnold's error to slot the ball home calmly from close range. Liverpool's woes were compounded in the first half as club captain Virgil van Dijk received a red card for a foul just outside the penalty area on Alexander Isak.

While it looked like Jurgen Klopp and co would throw in the towel after going a goal and a man down, Darwin Nuñez got his crowning moment as a Liverpool hero as he came off the bench to win the game for his side with a stunning late brace.

Newcastle even had a handful of chances to double their lead before Nuñez's introduction, but the Magpies were unable to do so, partly thanks to Alisson, who pulled off a truly magnificent save to deny Almiron in the first half.

Speaking to the Premier League's official website after the game, Howe called the Brazilian's effort to thwart Almiron one of the best he's ever witnessed.

He said: “We had a lot of chances, goalmouth action, and their goalkeeper has made one of the best saves I’ve ever seen. We needed that second goal, the small things go against you sometimes and that’s what happened. It wasn’t to be.”

The Reds' invaluable number one actually completed seven saves in the game – a personal high in the Premier League.

Thanks in part to Alisson's efforts, Liverpool have taken seven points out of a possible nine from their first three Premier League encounters, which is an impressive tally considering they were down to ten men in each of their last two games.

The Reds host Aston Villa at Anfield next weekend and will have to make do without Van Dijk, who is set to be suspended for one game after receiving his marching orders.
