Richard Hughes has a golden chance to do what very few of his predecessors have been able to do and sign a player directly from Manchester United.

There hasn't been a transfer at the men's senior level between the two clubs in 61 years. The last male player to move from Old Trafford to Anfield was Phil Chisnall, all the way back in 1964.

That a player moves from United to Liverpool and vice versa is pretty much unheard of in the modern history of English football.

Some notable players in recent memory who have played for both clubs are Michael Owen and Paul Ince - but neither moved directly from one club to the other.

But now Hughes should and could be looking to break this trend by signing one of United's best young talents.

The opportunity is there for the taking and the Liverpool sporting director just needs to explore it.

Why Liverpool have a golden chance of signing Kobbie Mainoo

Earlier this year it was reported that Man United were open to selling Mainoo with the club in a dire financial situation.

Since then the Red Devils have held talks with the youngster over a contract extension but this has been to no avail according to Football Insider with Mainoo reject his club's offer.

This opens up a genuine opportunity for Mainoo to leave Old Trafford for pastures new and that's something Liverpool should be monitoring closely.

Mainoo is the perfect profile for Arne Slot's style of play and exactly the kind of midfielder the Reds need.

Ryan Gravenberch has played a lot of minutes this season and he needs someone who can rotate alongside him in the squad.

Mainoo could do that and much more. At 19 years old, he is already a key part of England's senior national team and he's regarded as one of the best young English midfielders around.

Signing Mainoo would probably ensure Liverpool have set-up their midfield for the next decade to come with the options already at Slot's disposal.

United will be reluctant to sell to a rival but they are open to selling Mainoo and at the end of the day when a player is up for sale, they always have a price.

Working alongside Michael Edwards, Hughes could definitely strike a deal here if Liverpool are prepared to pay whatever the asking price may be.
