Donyell Malen makes move that could simplify Liverpool transfer
Liverpool still retain an interest in Borussia Dortmund's Donyell Malen, according to reports. The forward has made an interesting change.
This comes from Bild. They claim that Liverpool still hold an interest in Donyell Malen of Borussia Dortmund.
The Reds initially tried to sign the player before he moved to Dortmund - or, at least, they considered making a move. Ultimately, everyone went in different directions but Jurgen Klopp is still supposedly a fan.
And Dortmund are now wondering if Malen is going to push for a transfer sometime soon. Notably, he's changed agents, moving away from Mino Raiola's former agency.
He's now with Dutch agency SEG and that's certainly an interesting one from a Liverpool perspective. They also represent Cody Gakpo and were integral in completing his transfer from PSV Eindhoven in 2023.
There's a pipeline between the agency and the Reds, then. If Malen is indeed angling for a move to Anfield, this is the right way to go about it.
Malen has four goals this season, coming in 12 games. It's not the best-looking record, of course, but does scrub up quite well when you look at the data.
For one, he's only actually played 766 minutes in the Bundesliga this season. It means that he's averaging around 0.47 goals per 90 minutes, which is a fine record and exactly what he averaged last season, too.
In fact, no winger beats his goals per 90 average over the last 12 months across Europe's top five leagues. That is, at the end of the day, something to shout about.
It's very possible that Liverpool do retain an interest in the 24-year-old - it's just also very possible that it doesn't go anywhere.
The Reds do not need a new forward right now and boast several elite options as it is. While Malen might find a role in the squad, it wouldn't be one worth prioritising a transfer for.
This is just about worth keeping an eye on but with the Reds almost certainly chasing defensive options in 2024, not one you should expect.
