Dominik Szoboszlai update as Liverpool star MISSES win over Man United
Dominik Szoboszlai was a notable absentee from the Liverpool matchday squad for the 3-0 pre-season friendly victory over Manchester United.
The Hungary international had featured in both of the Reds' USA tour fixtures, scoring the only goal of the game against Real Betis last weekend before operating as a deep-lying midfielder in the win over Arsenal during the week.
Having impressed in those games, there was an expectation for Szoboszlai to start at the Williams-Brice Stadium in South Carolina on Sunday morning (UK time) as Liverpool looked to wrap up their tour of the States in style.
However, when the team news was announced around an hour before kick-off there was no sign of the 23-year-old in the starting line-up nor among the substitutes, thus prompting concerns amongst some fans over a potential injury.
Fortunately any concerns over Szoboszlai were eased immediately.
Speaking to the club's official website prior to kick-off against the Red Devils, Reds head coach Arne Slot revealed that the midfielder was simply rested following a hectic schedule.
Slot explains Szoboszlai's absence vs Man United
"I think it's our 13th day of the tour," the Dutchman explained. "Dominik joined every session and every game, and we played the last one two days ago.
"I think it's a bit of fatigue and we don't want to take any risks because we fly back to Liverpool tonight and on Tuesday all the other players arrive as well, so we want to start off then with all the players available and we didn't want to take any risk with him today."
Slot opting not to risk Szoboszlai was certainly the correct choice with Liverpool's Premier League season beginning in less than two weeks time, although it remains to be seen if the Hungarian will be available for selection against Sevilla next weekend in what is currently the club's final scheduled pre-season fixture.
