Diogo Jota responds to Alan Shearer after X-rated penalty outburst

Diogo Jota has fired back at Alan Shearer after a debatable penalty decision from last month's win over Newcastle provoked a sweary response from the Premier League's record goal-scorer.

Jota won the spot kick that sealed a 4-2 win over the Magpies, rounding Martin Dubravka before supposedly being brought down by the Newcastle stopper.

The incident gained notoriety due to the delay in Jota's reaction, which made fans think the Portugal international had maybe taken a dive.

These fears were quickly quashed after the game, with Dubravka himself admitting there was contact with Jota and it was a penalty.

There also seemed no reason otherwise for the forward to hit the deck, with an empty goal was gaping.

However, Shearer would still end up taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express his grief at the incident - labelling Jota as "f***ing embarrassing."

The Liverpool man has now responded to the jibe, stating that he would have obviously preferred to find the net himself if he hadn't been impeded.

"Listen, of course I saw some comments from ex-players and people who are paid to talk about situations," said Jota.

"The only thing I can say is even the keeper said it was a touch and I didn't feel the conditions to stay up. So that's it.

"Would I rather put the ball in the net than see Mo [Salah] take a penalty? Yes, of course. That's what I like to do - to score goals.

"That's all I have to say."

Making amends for an earlier missed penalty in the contest, Salah stepped up and fired in from the spot to secure the points for the Reds, continuing his fine scoring form this season.

Now away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Jota has admitted that the Egyptian's absence will be felt after such a strong first half to the campaign.

"Mo is a decisive player for us," he added. "He is always fit and always there and always assisting and scoring.

"We miss him, but we have the quality in our squad to share those goals that he would probably score by himself.

"This season it has been great for him. Obviously in the last few games maybe he didn't score as often as he would have probably wanted, but we trust him.

"He has been decisive for the team, even in the games where he doesn't score. Maybe he isn't scoring as much as people probably want him to, but he has assists and that counts as well because we are a team and all we want is to win."
