"Difficult to play against" - Virgil van Dijk on Liverpool new-boy

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk has praised the club's new centre-forward Darwin Nunez.

The Reds signed the Uruguay international from Benfica for a transfer fee of £67.50 million earlier this summer.

Nunez was exceptional against Manchester City in the Community Shield final last weekend.

The 23-year-old won a penalty and found the back of the net at the King Power Stadium.

With that being the case, Van Dijk had plenty of good things to say about Nunez during a post-match interview.

He told Hayters TV the following: “It’s been important (Nunez’s impact).

“First with the penalty moment. It was a good header, I have no idea if it was going to be on goal or not.

“He’s difficult to play against. Hopefully, he can show it for the rest of the season and we will all help him in some ways, make sure that he is comfortable and calm.

“Just work and don’t focus on what the outside world has to say because everyone has to say something these days. Head down, score goals, work and be important for the club.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Hopefully Nunez can have a big season. If the striker can fire, the pressure will somewhat be taken off Mohamed Salah.

Nunez scored 34 goals and registered four assists in 41 appearances for Benfica last season. The aforementioned figures highlight that the Uruguay international is capable of having a big campaign.

So, we are confident that Nunez can lead the way for Liverpool this season. But, only time will tell if that is to be the case.

As we have pointed out, the Reds signed Nunez for a big transfer fee. Hopefully the pressure does not get to him.
