"Didn't expect" - Jurgen Klopp talks about the success of this season so far

Jurgen Klopp has spoken about reaching the Champions League semi-final, FA Cup final and winning the Carabao Cup this season.

Speaking in his pre-Everton press conference, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, Klopp said the success of this season wouldn't be possible without last season's heroics.

"What the boys did last year was really special considering the situation. Qualifying for the Champions League was massive. There were moments when I thought we wouldn't make it. I hoped we'd avoid the Europa Conference League," said Klopp.

"The boys won game after game, Ali at West Brom. Outstanding. I loved every moment of it. We knew we would be stronger once we had the boys back plus Ibou.

"I didn't expect us to win the Carabao Cup, get to an FA Cup final, be one point off top in the Premier League and be in a Champions League semi-final, but I knew we'd be better [this season]."

Anfield Watch Verdict

What a season this is turning out to be. We have already won one trophy and we're on the brink of winning another three.

Villarreal will be a difficult game but it's definitely the tie that Klopp and Liverpool were hoping for when the draw happened. With that in mind, it would be a massive upset if the Reds did not reach a third final this season.

The other final against Chelsea is going to be a huge game. We've faced them three times this season, all of them ending up in draws after the 90 minutes.

Fortunately, Thomas Tuchel's side look like a shadow of their former self. Key players like N'golo Kante and Edouard Mendy have been in a poor run of form and they're still struggling with injuries to important players like Ben Chilwell and Mateo Kovacic.

This is a great time to face Chelsea and Klopp and his players will be hopeful that they can bring another trophy back to Anfield before the final day of the season.

The one trophy that isn't in our hands is the Premier League. However, Manchester City look vulnerable and fans are still hopeful that they will drop at least some points before the end of the season.

Whatever happens, this season has been one for the ages and it'll live long in a lot of fans' hearts.
