Didi Hamann calls for defensive signing to support 'formidable' duo

Didi Hamann believes Liverpool could do with a further defensive acquisition to set their squad apart from the rest.

Liverpool were heavily touted to sign a centre-back in the summer on top of their midfield recruits, but were unable to find a name that fit the bill and warranted their price tag.

And while Hamann rates the talent in Liverpool's back-line, he has argued that one more top defender could be the difference in the Reds' quest for success.

"At the moment, I can't think of too many areas where Liverpool need to strengthen," the former Reds player told Boylesports.

"Maybe it's defence as Konate has had a few injuries and Matip is getting a bit old. Van Dijk is playing pretty well at the moment and Liverpool need to see if he remains consistent in his performances.

"I would say Liverpool need a centre-back who's also able to play full-back. Having said that, Liverpool also have Joe Gomez, who fits in perfectly.

"Let's hope he stays fit. If you pushed me, I'd say Liverpool need to strengthen in the centre-back department, but apart from that, they're looking well-equipped.

"I can't think of any right now, but if you bring someone in, they'll be third or fourth-choice if Konate and Van Dijk stay fit."

Hamann was also sure to hail the defensive partnership of Van Dijk and Konate - something which could play to the detriment of Jurgen Klopp's mission to sign a top-class defender, given the inevitable competition for minutes that any newcomer would experience.

He added: "Those two have a formidable partnership.

"I know they play a lot of games and you need backup, but it's very hard to get a top-class centre-back if he knows he's not playing.

"That's the tricky thing about buying players. Everybody wants to play, but I'm sure Liverpool already have targets in mind if they want to bring someone in.

"I can't see any other positions being looked at."
