Liverpool transfers: Denmark star reveals extent of Reds' summer interest

Had Liverpool revived its historic links with Denmark this summer, nobody would have been happier than the midfielder at the centre of the transfer speculation.

Jan Molby was famously the first Dane to pull on the red shirt at Anfield, attracting an army of admirers with his scalpel-like creativity and barrel-chested strength in the centre of the park for Kenny Dalglish's Double-winning side of 1985/86.

Daniel Agger was another export from the homeland of Hans Christian Andersen who served the club with distinction, taking no prisoners when registering 232 appearances as a rugged centre-back from 2006 to 2014.

But the spells endured on Merseyside by their compatriots Torben Piechnik and Christian Poulsen were far from fairy tales, with both men making fewer than 25 outings.

Martin Hansen, Jorgen Nielsen and Michael Stensgaard, all goalkeepers, never featured in a competitive first-team game before moving on.

Liverpool's search for a number six, which ended in frustration with Martin Zubimendi's decision to stay with boyhood club Real Sociedad, reportedly also pulled Genoa's defensive midfielder Morten Frendrup into its scope.

Frendrup has been speaking about the speculation for the first time, while on international duty with Denmark this week.

The 23-year-old told Tipsbladet“It is clear that it [Liverpool] is a huge club, but there is a long way from concrete interest.”

“For me, it's about doing it as well as possible. My agent has to take care of everything else.”

Frendrup insists he's enjoying life in Italy, having joined Genoa from Danish club Brondby during the January transfer window of 2021/22.

“I am super happy to be in Genoa,” he added. “I feel like it's a really good place to be where I can develop and get a lot of playing time.

“It was not in my consideration to change this summer.”
