"Defending starts from the front" - Virgil van Dijk on Liverpool's defence this season

Virgil van Dijk has given his opinion on Liverpool's defence this season.

The Reds have already conceded nine goals in seven Premier League fixtures.

Liverpool shipped three goals against Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield last weekend.

Van Dijk, who is the leader of the club's defence, has given his verdict on the aforementioned situation.

As quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter, he told the Mirror the following: “We all know we have the responsibility of defending, but also attacking. Defending starts from the front and attacking starts from the back, and that’s how we have our principles. And we have to (get) back to that, to that consistency.

“We have to get back to that consistency, and play with joy and freedom. But it all starts with doing it together and working hard. I keep saying the same things, but we have to find that moment.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Van Dijk is spot on. The entire team has to defend to keep clean sheets. The back four can't be doing it all every week.

At the moment, Liverpool look broken. There is no method to how they are playing, which is very concerning.

It is crazy to think that the Reds competed for the quadruple last season. As things stand, Liverpool will not be competing for any silverware this campaign.

Hopefully the Reds can turn things around. But, they are running out of time. The football season could be gone before they know it.
