Liverpool have been one of the best sides in world football since the arrival of Arne Slot, but a big issue has overshadowed their early season success.

The Reds currently sit top of both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League and are also through to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

Despite enjoying such a good first half of the season, speculation surrounding the futures of three of the club’s biggest stars has overshadowed the Reds’ on-pitch success.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are all out of contract at the end of the season and could all leave Anfield for free.

Ornstein offers Alexander-Arnold update

Although the future of all three stars remains uncertain, reliable football transfers expert David Ornstein has provided some clarity on the current situation in Trent’s camp.

Speaking to NBC Sports on Monday, Ornstein said: “[That Alexander-Arnold is the most likely to leave] is the consensus within the industry, it would seem, and certainly reports in Spain suggest Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid is getting closer.

“My information is that nothing is decided just yet and so we need to bring a bit of calm to this situation. All options remain open and that’s largely because his camp have not been able to hold any formal negotiations yet and they cannot do that until January 1st.”

This won’t come as a surprise to Liverpool supporters, but it will be hard to hear nevertheless.

Real Madrid’s interest in the 26-year-old has been well documented, and some reports from Spain even stated that Trent has already decided to join Los Blancos, but Ornstein’s update suggests there is no truth to this.

Where will Alexander-Arnold end up?

In the same interview with NBC Sports, Ornstein confirmed Real Madrid’s interest, saying: “what we do know is that Real Madrid want to sign him - they are extremely keen.

“And so it presents him with a massive decision to make. He’s the homegrown boy, Liverpool born and bred. He’s coming into his peak years.”

The decision is undoubtedly a huge one, and one that will not only have an impact on Trent’s future but also the future of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool are clearly set up well to succeed under Arne Slot and the new regime. But how often do you get the opportunity to join a Galactico the size of Real Madrid?

The Anfield faithful will take some solace from Alexander-Arnold’s recent performances, as the off-field uncertainty doesn’t seem to be having too much impact on his performance.

The fullback added some fuel to the fire with his celebration after scoring against West Ham, making a talking action with his hand next to his ear.

This has some fans certain he is staying, and others have taken it as a bad omen. One thing is certain, all Liverpool supporters will be hoping that the 26-year-old dedicates his future to the Reds and remains at Anfield for years to come.
