Liverpool have been incredibly quiet in recent transfer windows. As well as declining the opportunity to add to the squad in January, the Reds only signed Federico Chiesa on a permanent basis last summer.

But this upcoming transfer window is shaping up to be an active one. First of all the club will be hoping to increase the summer transfer budget by offloading fringe and unwanted players.

We could see Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa and Luis Diaz all depart the frontline. If Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes are successful in selling off some talent then it could be a mega transfer window in terms of arrivals.

That’s according to the Athletic’s David Ornstein, who says the impending Premier League champions have “a lot to sort out” heading towards the off-season.

Ornstein details Liverpool summer business

“It’s going to be a really busy summer with recruitment,” he told NBC over the weekend. “They are in the mix for Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, and perhaps a striker with Darwin Nunez expected to leave as well.

“The uncertainty around Ibrahima Konate who is going into the last 12 months of his contract with no breakthrough on those terms.

“What’s going to happen with Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott, Joe Gomez, and even Luis Diaz who is approaching final two years of his contract. So there’s a lot to sort out.”

Bournemouth pair Kerkez and Huijsen could arrive as part of a landmark £100 million double deal while noise has been increasing regarding the arrival of Hugo Ekitike as No9.

Big changes at the back

Much of the season was overshadowed by contract wrangles involving Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

While Salah is now signed up until 2027, and Van Dijk seemingly well on the way, Hughes and Slot will be hoping the current standoffs over Konate and Diaz in particular don’t stretch out.

Konate is under contract until 2026 and the Reds would dearly love to tie him down on terms that make sense while Diaz is known to be dissatisfied with his current level of pay.

There will be BIG changes in defence too; Quansah is under a long-term contract but is not a favourite of Slot and Gomez was an outsider under the Dutchman even before his injury.

Harvey Elliott, meanwhile, could be sacrificed having failed to convince his head coach of his status as a starter. An asking price of £40m to £50m has been mentioned for the England under-21 international.

If Ornstein is correct then it could be a very different Liverpool we see defending their title next term.
