Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Arne Slot are attempting to lead an overhaul of the club’s playing squad.

This summer promises to be a landmark transfer window with several first-team stars under scrutiny. We could see big changes up front - with Mohamed Salah out of contract and question marks surrounding other forwards too.

Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota could be sold if the price is right while there are no guarantees over Luis Diaz or Federico Chiesa either.

At the back, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are coming to the end of their contracts.

Andy Robertson will need competition at left-back next season which is stronger than Kostas Tsimikas while Ibrahima Konate is another player locked in a contract standoff.

And that’s before we mention the incoming transfer of goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, which will put pressure on first-choice Alisson Becker.

Will Liverpool make midfield move?

It seems midfield is the only Liverpool position which hasn’t been suggested for a wholescale refit. Ryan Gravenberch was given the job at No6 last summer when the Reds missed out on Martin Zubimendi.

The advanced midfield options - including Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai - have proven themselves Wataru Endo and Tyler Morton, meanwhile, are capable of stepping in when required although they don’t have the trust of Slot to start games.

So will we see transfer activity in midfield this summer? Don’t count on it, according to David Ornstein of the Athletic.

Ornstein says NO midfield business planned

“This doesn’t seem to be a department at the top of their priority list, and — if that’s the case — you can understand why,” he tells Ask Ornstein.

“Martin Zubimendi was viewed as a market opportunity and when Liverpool’s pursuit didn’t come to fruition they decided against pivoting to another target; it was he who they wanted.

“That call appears to have been vindicated with Ryan Gravenberch’s outstanding season, Waturo Endo’s contributions, Alexis Mac Allister’s consistency and Curtis Jones shining when called upon.”

So it may be the case that Gravenberch will continue to command the central midfield position with Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and Jones fighting it out for the other two spots.

With money required in practically every other position, it appears Slot and Hughes will persist with their current midfield options for another season at least.
