David Coote Liverpool controversy is even WORSE as ex-ref tries to help

The David Coote situation looks worse for Premier League referees after an ex-ref tries to help. Liverpool will be watching closely.

David Coote was in the news on Monday as a video surfaced that appeared to show him speaking disparagingly of Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp. The man assumed to be Coote insulted both, with another man in the video declaring 'we hate Scousers'.

Coote has reportedly admitted that it's him in the video, though he also claims he doesn't remember making it. Liverpool have remained silent on the incident - they're waiting to see the result of a Premier League investigation.

But the situation might actually be worse than it looks. That's if comments by Peter Walton are correct - and he was trying to help.

Are things actually worse?

"What evidence we have now, the video itself, came as a huge surprise to me," said Peter Walton in The Times on Monday night. "There are some Premier League referees I consider more loose-lipped, and more laddish in their behaviour away from the public spotlight.

"David is not one of them."

So the insinuation here is that, actually, there's a lot more of this kind of stuff - we just don't see it. Literally the entire implication by 'loose-lipped' is that there are things that shouldn't be said because it will have negative consequences.

Walton isn't surprised that the comments were made, after all - he's just surprised that it's Coote saying them. So on a day when many Liverpool fans feel very, very vindicated, we're seeing a suggestion that maybe fans of many clubs should feel vindicated.

After all, there's quite plainly more of this stuff out there. It's just a question of whether we'll get to see it.
