"Contributing a lot more this season" - Pundit backs two Liverpool youngsters
Pundit Jermaine Jenas believes that Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones will contribute a lot more this season.
The midfield duo possess a lot of talent. There is a reason why Elliott and Jones are in and around Jurgen Klopp's first-team.
However, both players are yet to establish themselves in the German's starting XI.
To be fair, Elliott and Jones are up against the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara for a place in Klopp's midfield. They are all Champions League winners, so it is not an easy team to break into.
Elliott, 19, made 13 appearances for Liverpool last season. Jones, 21, made 27 appearances.
But, Jenas believes that we will see more of Elliott and Jones this season.
He told the BBC: “I was thinking about (Sadio) Mane going and how he is a massive loss – they have lost one of the best players in the Premier League.
"But it freshens their team up and they don’t have anything to worry about squad-wise.
"I can see Liverpool’s younger players like Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones contributing a lot more this season, and they have got the best defence in the league."
Anfield Watch Verdict
Jenas probably makes a fair point. Elliott and Jones are gradually improving. So, it is only natural that we will see more of them over time.
It is important to note that Elliott suffered a serious ankle injury back in September against Leeds United at Elland Road.
The Englishman missed a total of 30 Liverpool games last season. Providing Elliott stays fit, we will definitely see quite a bit of him in the upcoming campaign.
Liverpool do play in the Premier League, Champions League, League Cup and FA Cup. So, opportunities will be given to the younger squad members across the season.
Squad rotation is required to challenge on all fronts.
