"Confidence and swagger" - Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on Darwin Nunez
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain thinks that striker Darwin Nunez is going to be a great signing for Liverpool next season.
With the players returning to the AXA Training Centre for pre-season this week, we are getting a closer look at all the new players.
Whilst Nunez isn't due back until the end of the week, he has already received plenty of praise from Oxlade-Chamberlain.
“He reminded me a little bit of Luis (Diaz) when we played against him when he was at Porto. He’s that sort of a player that you know what you are going to get from – the athleticism, the speed, the strength, the power," the Liverpool midfielder told the club's official website.
“It was the same with him. I remember having to chase Luis back at Anfield at one point and he made me stick it into fifth gear and then try to find sixth to keep up with him! You sort of remember those things.
“When he walked through the door that was the first thing I remembered – don’t try to get in a race with him if I’m expecting to win! I think Darwin would be the same. I think Virgil (van Dijk) said first hand and Ibou (Konate) said as well how quick and strong he was.
“I think he had that confidence and swagger about him as well and I think as a striker, as a forward player, you sort of need to have that confidence to go and do good things and lead the team from up there.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
It's a shame that we can't see Nunez start pre-season with the rest of the team, but due to him having to represent Uruguay after the club season ended, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp gave him some extra time off.
Luckily, we won't have to wait long to see the 23-year-old forward in action.
I've got a feeling that he and Diaz are going to have a good bond because of their South American connection. The Colombian could be his unofficial tour guide.
Give it a few weeks and Nunez will be speaking Scouse with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones!
