Liverpool transfer news: Reds to face Premier League competition for £15m Serie A target

Liverpool are likely to face competition from both the Premier League and Serie A for transfer target Morten Frendrup, according to one report.

As first reported by Anfield Watch last year, the Reds have been monitoring the Danish midfielder in recent times, keeping tabs on his performances for Serie A side Genoa.

Frendup is a regular starter in Italy, having worked his way into the side since joining from Brondby in 2022.

Featuring in every game this season, the 22-year-old is capable of operating as a defensive midfielder but can also play in a more attacking role and has contributed four assists in Serie A so far this season.

While there has been no formal enquiry from Liverpool yet, Genoa don't expect to keep Frendrup – whose current contract runs until 2026 – in the long term, with admirers lining up.

Speaking to Tipsbladet, transfer reporter Gianluca Di Marzio claimed that the Italian club would likely settle for a price of around €15m (£13m) for their midfield star.

He said: "I would like to believe that Genoa will not sell him for less than €15m. They will probably try to get DKK 180-225m (£20-25m), but that is probably set too high. He lacks the ability to score goals, and therefore I would think that €15m is a fair price for Frendrup."

Di Marzio added that a summer transfer for Frendrup is more likely than a January move, after Genoa already let go of one of their star men this month.

He continued: "Genoa have sold Radu Dragusin to Tottenham, and they are not going to say goodbye to more top players until this summer. Here I am thinking of Morten Frendrup and Albert Gudmundsson, who are two of Genoa's absolute top players.

"I am sure that Frendrup and Gudmundsson will be the two most sought-after players in the summer transfer window. There will be interest from the Premier League and major Italian clubs. They like Frendrup and the fact that he never misses a game. He delivers steadily and well every single time. This is the kind of player any coach would like to have on his team."

While Frendrup may have plenty of admirers, Liverpool could have an advantage in convincing the star of a switch to Anfield should they wish to make a move.

Speaking to local press back in 2018, the former Brondy star admitted: "It’s a dream I’ve always had [to play for Liverpool], and I believe it will succeed. If I work hard, I believe in it."
