Bayern Munich quite openly want to beat Liverpool to one of their key transfer targets this summer.

Liverpool want to have a big transfer window in 2025. Anfield Watch exclusively revealed recently that an overhaul is planned in the forward positions.

It shouldn't be difficult to realise why. For one, most of Liverpool's forwards are proving to be very unreliable this season, Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo aside.

And there's no actual guarantee that Salah will even be a Red next season.

So a statement summer is on the way, in other words. Liverpool want to give Arne Slot a forward line that suits his style of play, rather than simply trying to make this one work.

By 'forward line', we mean the attacking impetus of the team. It won't necessarily be a series of like-for-like swaps, with players being signed simply to replace those who leave.

This will be a restructuring up top and everyone should find that exciting. If only because this attack is actually pretty good - Liverpool just believe it can be better.

However, one of the stars they're eyeing up won't be easy to grab. Bayern Munich are ready to make sure of that.

Bayern Munich enter the fray

It was reported earlier this week that Liverpool are 'keen' on a move for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz. That one doesn't need much of an explanation - Wirtz is an absolutely sensational player.

However, Manchester City and Real Madrid also want him. The latter could run into some trouble buying him, though, given Jude Bellingham plays the same role.

City, too, aren't quite the force they were. Liverpool will fancy their chances against them in the summer.

But Bayern are a different animal. They also want Wirtz and unlike other potential suitors, they're happy to discuss that in public.

Right before a UEFA Champions League fixture against Leverkusen, no less.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, now a supervisory board member and former CEO, tells AZ that he "makes no secret of the fact that it must clearly be our goal to sign Wirtz".

Now, of course, part of that is an attempt to unsettle Leverkusen ahead of a massive game. This is something Bayern like to do, most infamously when they actually bought Mario Gotze ahead of facing Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League final.

This is a similar story, though, it's also a warning to Wirtz's admirers. Bayern are very, very good at signing elite German players - there's a culture of them almost expecting to move there. There's a reason they'll say it publicly, after all.

And so beating them to Wirtz is no simple task and Liverpool will need to be very persuasive if they're to win this race. But what a coup it could be.

Win the Premier League and the Champions League and then say come and join us, alas this is all a pipe dream, the ghost they call Richard Hughes will not appear anywhere until September when he says, we tried as best we could but it wasn't good enough. Florian Wirtz decided to go somewhere else.
