You know the start of a new Premier League campaign is just around the corner when predictions are released.

From who will be crowned champions to who will be in the battle for the European places and who will finish top scorer, fans and pundits alike have been stating their opinions as to how the 2024/25 season will play out.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher falls into this category. Tipping his former club to not challenge Manchester City and Arsenal for the title, but still maintaining Arne Slot's side have enough quality to finish third once again.

However, one person who doesn't share this view is Carragher's fellow Sky Sports analyst Gary Neville. In fact, the former Manchester United defender has gone as far as to predict the Reds won't even finish inside the top six.

"The top four will look like?" asked Neville said on the Stick to Football podcast. "We have to go Arsenal and Manchester City because we all collectively agree. I do (agree about Manchester United getting in the top four). I am not sure (on Liverpool getting top four).

"Every season, yeah. I am quite often wrong as well. It gets played back during the season, it’s quite enjoyable – I am going to go Tottenham – the surprise of the season, it can be anything.

"Surprise Liverpool don’t finish in the top six."

Carragher delivers the perfect response

Unsurprisingly, Neville's prediction sparked a reaction from Carragher who believes the former England international is simply trying to create headlines!

"You are saying that to get headlines – if Man United don’t win their first two games everyone will be talking about ten Hag’s position."

Despite Liverpool not yet signing a player, there hasn't been a significant sale either. So for Neville to suggest a team that were the closest challengers to Man City and Arsenal in the title race last season could finish no higher than seventh a year later is bizarre, to say the least.

Perhaps his Man United bias was shining a little too strongly.
