"Cannot be undervalued" - Rio Ferdinand defends Jordan Henderson

Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has defended Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

Some Anfield supporters have suggested on social media that the midfielder is past his best.

However, Ferdinand believes that Henderson is still an important member of Liverpool's first-team.

As quoted by AW on Twitter, he told BT Sport the following: "(His) role in this team cannot be undervalued. There’s a lot of people and you see murmurs on social media that he’s getting a bit old, Jordan Henderson.

"His role in this team is to protect the right-hand side, he marshalled that side, as soon as anyone vacated the right-back, wide right slot he’d be security. He’d be there, they’ve lost that.

"They’ve added another dimension in (Harvey) Elliott and the way he interchanges with (Mohamed) Salah and Trent (Alexander-Arnold) but they’ve lost that stability, that steeliness of that honest positional sense to allow those players on that side.

"That’s why we’re seeing more opportunities to exploit that area because there’s nobody sitting there waiting.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We completely agree with Ferdinand's opinion. Henderson is the captain of the club for a reason.

The 32-year-old is contracted until the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign. Therefore, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp still has faith in Henderson.

The England international has been a terrific player for the Reds over the years. Henderson has scored 33 goals and registered 58 assists in 455 appearances for the club's first-team.

The midfielder has won seven major trophies and the Community Shield with Liverpool.

So, Henderson will be remembered as a legend of the club in the years to come. The captain is currently out of action due to a hamstring injury.

With that being the case, we wish him a speedy recovery.
