"Can bring something" - Pundit on Liverpool's reported interest in Timo Werner
Pundit Alan Hutton believes that Chelsea forward Timo Werner would be a handy signing for Liverpool.
The Reds have recently been linked with a move for the 26-year-old. Liverpool were reportedly interested in signing Werner back in 2020, but the German international ended up joining Chelsea instead.
Hutton thinks that the 26-year-old would add something to Liverpool's attack if they were to sign him this summer.
He told Football Insider the following: “I think Werner can bring something with his pace and his trickery. I think he could fit into the system. I think if you look at the way Liverpool have played over the years (Jurgen) Klopp has been there, he likes that type of winger coming in from the side of the pitch and I think that’s where he’s better.
“I don’t think Werner’s an out and out number nine to me, I think he misses too many opportunities but he’s a problem out on the wing, he’s a problem for defenders, the way (Sadio) Mane was and obviously with him leaving there’s possibly room.
“I’d be very surprised if Chelsea just let him go. With (Romelu) Lukaku leaving they won’t want to leave themselves short so I can’t see it happening.”
Werner contracts does not expire until the summer of 2025. He is valued at £31.50 million.
Anfield Watch Verdict
Werner has struggled since joining Chelsea. The forward has only scored 23 goals in 89 appearances.
However, Werner is a better player than what the aforementioned statistics suggest.
Before joining the Blues, the 26-year-old found the back of the net 93 times in 158 appearances for RB Leipzig's first-team.
Werner would certainly add some quality and depth to Liverpool's forward line. But, the reality is, Klopp is not short of attacking options.
He has the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez at his disposal.
Therefore, we don't want to see the club make a move for Werner.
