"Brilliant bit of business" - Pundit praises Liverpool for selling 21-year-old
Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has praised Liverpool for getting a reasonable transfer fee for Neco Williams.
With the full-back officially leaving Liverpool to join Nottingham Forest this summer, one pundit thinks that the Reds did the right thing by selling him.
“Liverpool, in order to pay the wages to the giants, they have to make ends meet in other ways," McLeish told Football Insider.
“Chelsea made a good fist of that over the last few years by capturing young players, putting them out on loan then selling some of them and making good money.
“You have to balance the books. That’s a good bit of business. There will be kids who won’t reach the level you want them to but they could do it somewhere else.
“I saw Forest in the play-offs last season and they do need to get players in because they need to go up a level. It’s a brilliant bit of business from Liverpool to get that fee.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
The fact that Liverpool have received £17.5 million for Williams is unbelievable.
The right-back was stuck behind Trent Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order at Anfield, so we don't really know if he is up to Premier League standard.
However, Williams might do well at Nottingham Forest, as they will play to his strengths, something Liverpool couldn't afford to do. He is a big-money signing for them after all.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have also put in a 15 per cent sell-on clause. If he is a success at Nottingham Forest, then Liverpool could earn a pretty penny.
I wish Williams all the best with his future and I for one will definitely be keeping an eye on him next season.
