Bayern Munich's director of sport Max Eberl has cast doubt over Joshua Kimmich's future at the club, with Liverpool in the hunt for the German's signature.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the experienced midfielder as his future looks increasingly uncertain in Munich, with the 29-year-old also capable of playing right-back.

Reliable reports from Germany have suggested that Liverpool are among the top clubs across Europe monitoring his situation, with the possibility that the Reds have already made contact with the Bayern star.

Bayern chief Eberl has also admitted that there is no guarantee that Kimmich will stay with Die Roten, potentially opening the door for an Anfield switch.

COULD JOSHUA KIMMICH LEAVE BAYERN MUNICH?

Speaking to Sky Sports in Germany (via Fabrizio Romano), Eberl admitted: "He told us very clearly: 'I want to know who the new coach is'. We will see whether he wants to stay, whether we want it, is ultimately up to Joshua to decide."

Kimmich's current deal with Bayern expires in 2025 and it remains unclear whether he will extend, with Eberl remaining coy on the subject ahead of undoubted interest in the summer transfer window.

The 84-cap Germany international would be an excellent signing for the Reds, but would go against Liverpool's general rule of not signing older players on big contracts.

There has been some criticism of Kimmich's displays this season as Bayern have struggled for form and consistency, with many in Germany favouring him as a right-back over a holding midfielder. However, Kimmich prefers to operate in the engine room.

Liverpool and Bayern have done business before, with Thiago Alcantara making the move to Anfield in 2020 and Sadio Mane going the other way in 2022.
