Man Utd vs Liverpool: Darwin Nunez called out for costly 'basic mistake'

Liverpool's hopes of winning an unprecedented quadruple came to a disappointing end on Sunday, with a last-gasp defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter final.

Despite twice leading the game and dominating for large periods, the Reds lost 4-3 at Old Trafford, conceding a heartbreaking 121st-minute strike from Amad Diallo.

While the defeat is only Liverpool's fifth of the season in all competitions, with the Reds having already won the Carabao Cup, the nature of the performance as well as the opponents mean it will still sting for supporters and players alike.

Jurgen Klopp's side display against their rivals was uncharacteristically error-strewn, with several players coming in for criticism after the final whistle for their inability to see the game out from a winning position.

Harvey Elliott's extra-time goal to make it 3-2 appeared to put the Reds on track for victory, while there were plenty of other chances to put distance between the two sides.

However, Marcus Rashford was allowed to equalise on 112 minutes after some sloppy defending giving United fresh hope, before Diallo's winner followed right at the death to complete the turnaround.

Former Red turned pundit Jason McAteer was particularly critical of Darwin Nunez's decision making in the build-up to Rashford's leveller.

The Uruguayan surrendered possession while trying to come inside in his own half, leading to United's attack.

'A simple basic mistake'

“If I am going into the dressing room, I am saying why are you there? (The left-back spot) and why is that the decision you made,” a visibly annoyed McAteer on beIN SPORTS.

“To come inside, at that point of the game, and try to play a ball inside. Why are you doing that? You have got (Kostas) Tsimikas behind you. You can kill this game!

“First of all, I don’t want you there. Secondly, that isn’t the decision in that part of the football pitch. You don’t make that decision. That is a simple basic mistake.”

Nunez was far from the only Liverpool star to come in for stick following the final whistle.

Jamie Carragher described Cody Gakpo as playing in 'slow motion' after coming on off the bench on the 77th minute.

Liverpool have time to reflect on the defeat now, with the international break meaning they won't play again until March 31 when they take on Brighton at Anfield in the Premier League.
