Jurgen Klopp: Ballon d'Or winner reveals 'dream' that could become reality
Lothar Matthaus admits his Jurgen Klopp ‘dream’ that could become a reality very soon. The manager will leave Liverpool this year.
Germany legend Lothar Matthaus admits he shares a 'dream' that Jurgen Klopp manages his national side. The Ballon d'Or winner was very clear that he hopes this can become a reality one day.
"It does depend on the results of the European Championship in two months and the position of Julian Nagelsmann," Matthaus told Anfield Watch. "Maybe they would like to talk to him first before contacting Jürgen Klopp.
"But in Germany, in the last two, three years, our dream, our wish is that Jürgen Klopp will be the next national coach. We respect him a lot and he has a great story what he has written in the last nine years with Liverpool and before that with Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.
"He is really a man who we believe in, we trust him, he has a good presentation not only for the players, but he presents German football in a good way. We are not unhappy if Jürgen Klopp is the next national coach for Germany.
"But now, we have Julian Nagelsmann and we cross our fingers for him that he will have a better result than in the last tournament. It should not be difficult to make it better [laughs]."
Jurgen Klopp and the German National Team
Klopp has been linked with the German national team for years now - long before he announced his intention to leave Liverpool. Now that dream just feels much more realistic.
Especially with Nagelsmann almost certainly stepping down himself. He's been quite open about the idea, wanting a return to club management and admitting he'd sign a contract with someone even before Euro 2024.
That would open the door for Klopp to take over - but not for another year. He can't work anywhere else for the next year, of course, as per his agreement with Liverpool.
They're letting him out of his contract a year early, thus he has to take a year off. Though, that's apparently something he wishes to do anyway.
But if Germany are willing to wait, they have every chance of landing Matthaus's 'dream' hire in a year's time. It feels like the next logical step for Klopp - dream becoming reality.
